August is Membership and New Club Development MonthPotential club members are everywhere. But to get them to join Rotary, clubs must use creativity and imagination, says Past RI President Cliff Dochterman. "Rotary International leaders keep emphasizing membership growth and extension because Rotary's very survival depends on it," says Dochterman, a member of the Rotary Club of Moraga, California, USA, and author of The ABCs of Rotary, a resource for new members. "If Rotary is to grow, we all must take action." Dochterman believes clubs can thrive by seeking new members, retaining current ones, and sponsoring new clubs in the community. He offers the following tips: Seeking new membersClubs must have a specific plan in place, says Dochterman.

Big Sky Rotary Supports New Teacher HousingBIG SKY- On July 12, Habitat for Humanity of Gallatin Valley and Big Sky School District, along with AmeriCorp volunteers, broke ground on the first-ever teacher housing project in Big Sky. The development will consist of two triplexes, providing six school-owned units on school district property. “We’re excited to break ground on a groundbreaking accomplishment,” BSSD Superintendent Dustin Shipman said of the project; it’s the first time that Habitat has partnered with a school district to provide housing in Montana. The project will help address ongoing struggles the school district faces, from losing teachers that commute from Bozeman—which comprises half of the school district’s workforce—after an average of four or five years, or the crisis that teachers renting in Big Sky face when landlords suddenly give them a month to clear out so the house or apartment can enter the short-term rental market. Coming in at approximately $130,000 per unit, the school district plans to rent the triplexes below market value. Habitat for Humanity Gallatin Valley was awarded $400,000 in Big Sky resort tax funding by the Big Sky Resort Area District board of directors in June specifically for the project. The development, which was estimated in March to cost approximately $900,000, was also funded by a $600,000 levy voted in by the community in May. According to David Magistrelli, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Gallatin Valley, the first triplex should have exteriors finished by early October and be livable by late fall. Construction will begin on the second triplex as soon as possible spring 2020. Magistrelli added that the project is about a month behind schedule at this point due to a combination of obtaining approval from the county and the respective homeowner association and the challenge of finding available contractors in Big Sky’s thriving building market. “As soon as [the units are] done, we want teachers living in them,” Shipman told EBS. He said that teachers who choose to live alone would pay more than those that room with other school staff. The school board is still determining many of the details concerning the units, Shipman said, such as reasonable occupancy per unit, rent costs and other factors. This dialogue will continue at their July 24 board meeting. |
Non Profits Working Together in Big Sky“I continue to be impressed with the power of partnerships in this incredible community,” said Ryan Hamilton of Town Center. “When we were designing the Plaza, we set what we thought was a realistic budget for a small playground, but when the bids came back, it was clear that our budget would need to be increased to get a fun and safe playground that the kids will use and that the community can be proud of. We reached out to Rotary of Big Sky and PRG Commercial (the Plaza contractor) with a partnership proposal and they were excited to support the project. Rotary then reached out to the YCCF for additional support in order to put the finishing touches on the project with the elastic safety surfacing. We are thrilled with the way that it turned out, and we thank them for their support.”

April is Maternal and Child Health MonthRotary International's new monthly theme for April is Maternal and Child Health! Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotary provides immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improves access to essential medical services, and supports trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Rotary’s projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs. Maternal and Child Health Care is also recognized as one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus.

March is Water and Sanitation MonthMarch is Water and Sanitation Month! The Rotary Club of Big Sky is funding Water Projects in both Haiti and Guatemala in 2019. Unsafe sanitation is a massive problem that is becoming more urgent as our global population increases and trends like water scarcity and urbanization intensify. About 4.5 billion people—more than half the world’s population—either practice open defecation or use unsafe sanitation facilities and services. To be effective, sanitation must be carefully managed at all stages, from the point that waste is collected and contained to how it is transported and treated. If there are gaps or breaks at any stage, then harmful human waste flows into surface waters and fields where children play and people of all ages live, eat, drink and bathe. Poor sanitation, which is widely accepted as a chief contributor to waterborne diseases, is the cause of more than 1,200 deaths of children under five-years-old per day, more than AIDS, measles, and tuberculosis combined. Inadequate sanitation and hygiene were the cause of more than half a million deaths from diarrhea alone, in 2016. |

Crail Ranch Applauses Rotary Club of Big Sky for Structure DonationThe District Govenor of Rotary, Roy Beekman, and Rotary of Big Sky members will attend a thank you dedication of the new Crail Ranch support structure on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 5:00 pm. The Rotary of Big Sky donated $12,000 toward the purchase of the support structure with funds raised from the 2014 Golf Auction. |
Rotary WorkingCrail Ranch Support BuildingThe Historic Crail Ranch sits in the middle of Big Sky’s Meadow Village. Originally the home of the Augustus Crail family that homestead this area from 1905 to 1950, long neglect had allowed the buildings to start to fall to ruin. The Gallatin Valley Women’s Club started the preservation efforts in the 1990s, and these have been continued by the Historic Crail Ranch Committee, a part of the Big Sky Community Corporation. These dedicated volunteers have done a wonderful job of restoring the cabins, gathering photographs and artifacts and preserving the history of Big Sky. However, the little one room cabin that served as a home for the first several years of the homestead had to be used for storage of equipment, gardening, and material awaiting restoration. In order to return this cabin to the ranch exhibit, it was necessary to erect a storage facility near the entrance to the property. The building, designed and built by Frontier Rustic Designs of Norris, MT, was made to compliment the existing historic buildings on the site. However, finding the $12,000 to purchase the structure was a problem for this volunteer committee. The Rotary Club of Big Sky had worked with the B.S.C.C. on the Community Park Climbing Boulders and improvements to Kircher Park. This extension was a natural fit, and the Homestead Museum project fit with our goal of community improvement. We were able to pay for the building out of the 2014 Gold Raffle and Auction proceeds and donate it to the preservation committee. |
Rotary WorkingRotary of Big Sky Funds Community Information SignsThe Town Center and Meadow Village Information Signs provide a lot of useful information for visitors on the Big Sky area. Both signs are located adjacent to the bus stops. These informational signs contain maps of Big Sky area trails, the layout of town center, meadow village, west fork meadows and mountain village. It also has maps of the Biggest Skiing in America as well as a list of upcoming events. |
Rotary WorkingClimbing Boulders in Big Sky Community ParkThe Big Sky Community Park has been under development for several years under the direction of the Big Sky Community Corporation. One of the goals was to create a Climbing Boulder area for the children of this mountain community. With money earned from two Gold Raffle and Auctions, as well as a hot tub raffle, we were able to raise $25,000 to pay for the first boulder in the summer of 2012. This was so well received, and with the great success of the 2013 Auction and private donations, we were able to come up with another $45,000 to build two more boulders and complete the project that summer. The Community Park now has three large concrete boulders. One is small enough for little children, one intermediate in height, and a 12’ one for serious climbing. Each boulder has specifically designed holds and routes from easier to more difficult. The Rotary Club of Big Sky is proud to be able to fulfill our goal of community improvement and service to children with this project. |
