Rotary Club Seeks Families for the Christmas Giving Tree

The Rotary Club of Big Sky, with the help of the Big Sky Community, is once again sponsoring the Christmas Giving Tree.

The Giving Tree is an annual program that helps families during Christmas by providing gifts for the children and a Christmas dinner for the family. If you would like to partcipate in this project, please pick up a Santa Letter for each child from either one of the two banks, the Food Bank or the Country Market and help each child fill out their Santa Letter.

Kids can request three gifts from Santa. Please keep toy/book requests under value of $50 each.

Please mail the Santa Letters in the provided self-addressed stamped envelope as soon as possible and no later the December 1st.

Once the Santa Letter is received, Big Sky Rotary will place one angel ornament on the Christmas Giving Tree. Community members will pick up an angel ornament and fulfill the child’s wish by purchasing the gift.

A Rotarian will schedule gift delivery on December 23rd (or before if communicated). The Rotary Club will also provide the family with a Christmas dinner basket at the time of gift delivery.

Please know this program is completely confidential. It is also important to know that because of Covid19 that our deadlines are a little earlier this year, giving us time to grant as many wishes as possible.

Happy Holidays!

August is Membership and New Club Development Month

story thumbnail

Potential club members are everywhere. But to get them to join Rotary, clubs must use creativity and imagination, says Past RI President Cliff Dochterman.

"Rotary International leaders keep emphasizing membership growth and extension because Rotary's very survival depends on it," says Dochterman, a member of the Rotary Club of Moraga, California, USA, and author of The ABCs of Rotary, a resource for new members. "If Rotary is to grow, we all must take action."

Dochterman believes clubs can thrive by seeking new members, retaining current ones, and sponsoring new clubs in the community. He offers the following tips:

Seeking new members

Clubs must have a specific plan in place, says Dochterman.

  • Use a team approach. Teams should have several members who meet with qualified business and professional leaders to discuss the benefits of joining Rotary.
  • Set aside one club meeting per month to be a "visitor day," to which all club members would invite a friend or prospective member.
  • Seek out natural prospects, including Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotaractors, and Group Study Exchange (GSE) team members.

A Thank-You letter from Alexine Liddle

"As the recipient of last year's scholarship, I figured you guys would want an update on my educational status!  I am still enrolled in the Montana State University Honors College pursuing my degree in microbiology on the pre-veterinary medicine track.  My freshman year was a whirlwind of activity. I greatly enjoyed my classes pertaining to biology and animal science; I did not enjoy the chemistry and calculus quite as much, but they were character builders and I saw myself improve.  Besides my classwork, I was involved heavily in Korean Club (I achieved fluency in the Korean language in February) as well as in Intervarsity, a fantastic Christian organization that does amazing things on campus.  Thanks to your scholarship, I was able to spend more time on both my classes and my extracurricular activities and less time worrying about my financial status.  Thank you so much for your generosity; it means the world to me!
Hope you are all staying healthy and happy!

Thank you again for your support,"

Accident Victim Claims Call Box Saved Lives

story thumbnail
"It was one of those beautiful spring mornings when you can almost see ice crystals on what appears to be a clear road. I had already experienced some instability on corners and driving over the first bridge while heading north towards Bozeman on 191 to my son’s track meet; but the driver coming from Bozeman was hitting his first the river crossing at the Lava Lake pull out. Both he and the car behind him were completely out of control on the bridge as I approached. The southbound truck collided with me head-on, completely crushing the entire driver’s side of my Suburban and setting off airbags in both vehicles. I remember climbing out of the car on the passenger side in a confused state. There was airbag dust everywhere that looked like smoke and a man yelling at me from the other side of the highway. His concern was whether we were all okay, and it appeared we were. His next concern was that we were in an extremely dangerous place, out of view of oncoming traffic and just across an icy bridge. I was unable to find my phone through the smoke and dust and was worried about my dog who was also missing. The people in the truck that hit me had yet to get out of their vehicle (they said they were okay, but seemed confused). I yelled to the man across the highway to please call 911. His reply threw me: ‘There’s no cell service here, ma’am!’  As a Big Sky resident, of course I knew there wasn’t service, but I had never thought about actually being in this situation in the canyon. It was then that I saw the Emergency Call Box literally across the highway. I can’t tell you my relief when I picked it up and immediately was speaking to an actual person who explained that help was on the way."

"You never think you will be the one feeling helpless and stranded without cell service or help in the middle of the canyon. But it can happen. I am so very grateful for the Call Box near Lava Lake - I can’t tell you! I had told a local who passed by to please call my husband when they got to cell service, but the delay was excruciating. The emergency crew and sheriff were there so quickly due to the Call Box.  I feel like this definitely helped eliminate further accidents that icy morning. Thank you so much, Rotary Club, for proactively taking on this project and making a dangerous drive a little less stressful for us all!"

Big Sky Rotary Supports New Teacher Housing

Posted by Mohn/ Bay Stephens
story thumbnail

BIG SKY- On July 12, Habitat for Humanity of Gallatin Valley and Big Sky School District, along with AmeriCorp volunteers, broke ground on the first-ever teacher housing project in Big Sky. The development will consist of two triplexes, providing six school-owned units on school district property.

“We’re excited to break ground on a groundbreaking accomplishment,” BSSD Superintendent Dustin Shipman said of the project; it’s the first time that Habitat has partnered with a school district to provide housing in Montana.

The project will help address ongoing struggles the school district faces, from losing teachers that commute from Bozeman—which comprises half of the school district’s workforce—after an average of four or five years, or the crisis that teachers renting in Big Sky face when landlords suddenly give them a month to clear out so the house or apartment can enter the short-term rental market.

Coming in at approximately $130,000 per unit, the school district plans to rent the triplexes below market value.

Habitat for Humanity Gallatin Valley was awarded $400,000 in Big Sky resort tax funding by the Big Sky Resort Area District board of directors in June specifically for the project. The development, which was estimated in March to cost approximately $900,000, was also funded by a $600,000 levy voted in by the community in May.

According to David Magistrelli, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Gallatin Valley, the first triplex should have exteriors finished by early October and be livable by late fall. Construction will begin on the second triplex as soon as possible spring 2020.

Magistrelli added that the project is about a month behind schedule at this point due to a combination of obtaining approval from the county and the respective homeowner association and the challenge of finding available contractors in Big Sky’s thriving building market.

“As soon as [the units are] done, we want teachers living in them,” Shipman told EBS. He said that teachers who choose to live alone would pay more than those that room with other school staff.

The school board is still determining many of the details concerning the units, Shipman said, such as reasonable occupancy per unit, rent costs and other factors. This dialogue will continue at their July 24 board meeting.

Non Profits Working Together in Big Sky

“I continue to be impressed with the power of partnerships in this incredible community,” said Ryan Hamilton of Town Center. “When we were designing the Plaza, we set what we thought was a realistic budget for a small playground, but when the bids came back, it was clear that our budget would need to be increased to get a fun and safe playground that the kids will use and that the community can be proud of. We reached out to Rotary of Big Sky and PRG Commercial (the Plaza contractor) with a partnership proposal and they were excited to support the project. Rotary then reached out to the YCCF for additional support in order to put the finishing touches on the project with the elastic safety surfacing. We are thrilled with the way that it turned out, and we thank them for their support.”

Big Sky Rotary Donates $2500 to La Vega Water Project

Posted by Mohn on Apr 15, 2019
story thumbnail
Big Sky Rotary has recently donated $2500 to The La Vega Water Project and $2500 to the Maya Pedal Project in Guatemala.  Our Big Sky Club members, Laura and Lee, along with three Lone Peak High School Seniors, are currently volunteering in Guatemala to help facilitate both projects.
http://www.mayapedal.org

Phase I: Water Global Grant 18-72020 in La Vega, Guatemala

Our Rotary project will impact over 1,300 lives in the community of La Vega, Guatemala by providing a safe and reliable drinking water source (Phase I) and sanitation services (Phase II). Phase I will involve drilling a well, constructing a water storage tank, and installing water distribution lines to homes. Phase I to provide potable water will cost $290,000. The second phase to improve sanitation will be constructed after Phase I is complete and operational.

Currently, residents of La Vega rely on individual shallow wells that are generally 30 feet (9.1 m) deep. Homes in the community use individual pit toilets. Therefore, most wells are contaminated by fecal coliform necessitating the need to boil water before drinking. In addition, the community is surrounded by sugar cane and rubber tree plantations and is located at the end of a large watershed. The proximity to production agricultural and location within the watershed introduces other pollutants to their drinking water. Water borne diseases are a constant presence in the community resulting in lost wages and poor health outcomes.

Phase I will solve the issue of contaminated water. April is Maternal and Child Health Month

Rotary International's new monthly theme for April is Maternal and Child Health!

Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotary provides immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improves access to essential medical services, and supports trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Rotary’s projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs.

Maternal and Child Health Care is also recognized as one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus.

March is Water and Sanitation Month

March is Water and Sanitation Month!
The Rotary Club of Big Sky is funding Water Projects in both Haiti and Guatemala in 2019.

Unsafe sanitation is a massive problem that is becoming more urgent as our global population increases and trends like water scarcity and urbanization intensify. About 4.5 billion people—more than half the world’s population—either practice open defecation or use unsafe sanitation facilities and services. To be effective, sanitation must be carefully managed at all stages, from the point that waste is collected and contained to how it is transported and treated. If there are gaps or breaks at any stage, then harmful human waste flows into surface waters and fields where children play and people of all ages live, eat, drink and bathe.

Poor sanitation, which is widely accepted as a chief contributor to waterborne diseases, is the cause of more than 1,200 deaths of children under five-years-old per day, more than AIDS, measles, and tuberculosis combined. Inadequate sanitation and hygiene were the cause of more than half a million deaths from diarrhea alone, in 2016.

February is Peace & Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month

Millions of people all over the world are currently displaced by armed conflict or persecution. In fact, 90% of casualties in armed conflicts are civilians, half of which are children. Through service projects and Rotary programs, the Rotary family is committed to pursuing projects that address the structural causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.....

After raising $90,000 with the help of the Simkins family and the Yellowstone Club Community Foundation, the Big Sky Rotary Club has built a playground outside the Wilson Hotel in the new Town Center plaza.
In the spring, they will install rubberized safety surfacing.

“This is a wonderful thing for our community because it’s not only for tourists and visitors, but local children will use it,” Rotary Club president Sam Lightbody said, adding that it will be a relief for parents browsing stands at the summer farmers market or enjoying outdoor concerts.

One of the club’s heartwarming initiatives, Rotary Giving Tree, furnishes Christmas gifts to children whose parents who can’t afford them; and provides a Christmas meal. The yearly funds for many of the organization’s local projects come from the annual Gold Raffle and Auction, where they raffle off $2,500 in pure gold. This year’s event will be held on Jan. 25th at Buck's T-4 Restaurant.

Big Sky Rotary Club's 2017/2018 accomplishments include installing solar-powered 911 emergency call boxes in the Gallatin Canyon; funding a new kayak launch at Moose Creek Campground; providing 18 LeapPads, three bulletin boards and two projectors to Morningstar Learning Center; funding recycle bins for the Music in the Mountains concerts; leading local high school students to Nepal on a mission trip; and funding new digital library books for Ophir Elementary.

Crail Ranch Support Building

The Historic Crail Ranch sits in the middle of Big Sky’s Meadow Village.  Originally the home of the Augustus Crail family that homestead this area from 1905 to 1950, long neglect had allowed the buildings to start to fall to ruin.  The Gallatin Valley Women’s Club started the preservation efforts in the 1990s, and these have been continued by the Historic Crail Ranch Committee, a part of the Big Sky Community Corporation.  These dedicated volunteers have done a wonderful job of restoring the cabins, gathering photographs and artifacts and preserving the history of Big Sky.  However, the little one room cabin that served as a home for the first several years of the homestead had to be used for storage of equipment, gardening, and material awaiting restoration.  In order to return this cabin to the ranch exhibit, it was necessary to erect a storage facility near the entrance to the property.

The building, designed and built by Frontier Rustic Designs of Norris, MT, was made to compliment the existing historic buildings on the site.  However, finding the $12,000 to purchase the structure was a problem for this volunteer committee.

The Rotary Club of Big Sky had worked with the B.S.C.C. on the Community Park Climbing Boulders and improvements to Kircher Park.  This extension was a natural fit, and the Homestead Museum project fit with our goal of community improvement.   We were able to pay for the building out of the 2014 Gold Raffle and Auction proceeds and donate it to the preservation committee.

Climbing Boulders in Big Sky Community Park

The Big Sky Community Park has been under development for several years under the direction of the Big Sky Community Corporation.  One of the goals was to create a Climbing Boulder area for the children of this mountain community.

With money earned from two Gold Raffle and Auctions, as well as a hot tub raffle, we were able to raise $25,000 to pay for the first boulder in the summer of 2012.  This was so well received, and with the great success of the 2013 Auction and private donations, we were able to come up with another $45,000 to build two more boulders and complete the project that summer.

The Community Park now has three large concrete boulders.  One is small enough for little children, one intermediate in height, and a 12’ one for serious climbing.  Each boulder has specifically designed holds and routes from easier to more difficult.

The Rotary Club of Big Sky is proud to be able to fulfill our goal of community improvement and service to children with this project.Image
